I QUIT
Question:
Amen Al. I’ve tried writing nasty notes to the posters of porn, but their addresses are always fake, and the notes just bounce back to me. Ignore them is the best policy. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Al Goldman wrote: > In article <20001216214846.20785.00005…@ng-cp1.news.cs.com>, hmcumi…@cs.com > (HMCUMINGS) writes: > >I AM SO SICK AND TIRED OF THE PORN THAT GETS ONTO THIS MESSAGE >BOARD. I think the problem is that you are familiar with bulletin boards, this is not one of those, it is a newsgroup, propagated on all news servers throughout the world via the internet. There is no control over newsgroup content except "moderated" newsgroups, even then the moderator gets the spam and deletes it so you don’t see it, or some isp’s moderate some newsgroups by not having them on their servers It is easy to delete it, filter it or use moderated newsgroups only Hope this explains a little bit Chris

We’re lucky that glaucoma is on topic in Sci.Med.Vision, so that if things ever get really bad we can simply move to a "big eight" newsgroup. The science or sci.* newsgroups get much better response from spam complaints. Everybody here should probably be reading that newsgroup anyway. >Carol

Hi, Please forgive the length of this response, but your real irritation at these posts deserves an appropriate answer. It really does not do much good to complain IN the newsgroup about off topic subjects, Spam, MMF (Make Money Fast) Ponzie schemes. It does no good to respond or complain to the clueless poster – in fact doing so will only give them your REAL email address so they can target you directly. Unfortunately, these posts are in the process of bringing most of the alt. groups to their knees. Many of the groups who monitor and filter USENET for spamming now believe that the alt.* groups are doomed because of the sheer volume of these posts flooding the groups. However, it is proactive to lodge complaints with the offenders carrier. They will, in most cases, loose their account – with no refund – for posting Spam, Sex ads, and MMF. This is against the Terms of Service of most carriers. Reputable servers should be running programs that prevent identical messages being sent out in-mass from their servers. If they are not doing this, they should be encouraged by all of us to do so – Starting with our own ISP’s. Believe it or not, many Sex and Advertising sites will yank accounts for USENET spamming by their "solicitors" – complain to them as well (use a web based email account to do it). By doing nothing, by ignoring these posts, by accepting the inevitability of these idiots, it can be argued that we get what we are willing to tolerate. It does help to report those who abuse the system. The reasoning that I should not be forced to pay for someone to send/expose me to advertising that I do not support and do not want is a valid argument in my mind. Sitting on one’s hands while USENET is rendered USELESSNET is not something I am willing to concede at this point. Instead of just quitting, I encourage you to: Visit, and use, www.spamcop.com (information on Spam and what to do about it) and www.spamcop.net to identify and report email and http://spamcop.net/fom-serve/cache/144.html to learn about reporting USENET spammers. Support proactive legislation that addresses this infringement of all of our rights to utilize USENET and email services. My .02 cents for what it is worth – but just ignoring it is tacit approval. Getting mad and getting even by making it unacceptable -in any forum- may yet help save USENET. Carol "HMCUMINGS" <hmcumi…@cs.com> wrote in message

Just a further thought on the porn and other spam that shows up in this group from time to time: I tried sci.med.vision and other groups, but found them too generalized for me. It felt great coming back here. It only takes a second to skip those messages. It would be nice if there was some way to block them altogether, or delete them once they get here. But since there isn’t, I’m perfectly willing to click on "next" when the spam appears. It’s a small price to pay for an otherwise on-topic discussion. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -HMCUMINGS wrote: > I AM SO SICK AND TIRED OF THE PORN THAT GETS ONTO THIS MESSAGE BOARD. I was involved in trying to set up a moderated newsgroup for a hobby of mine and it is a huge amount of work. Writing a charter and a moderation policy, electing moderators, posting everything to News.Groups so the self appointed "Net Gods" could review our group, making trivial changes and then doing the whole process again. The final vote. Yes – 130, No – 38 We lost due to not meeting the rule of having at least 100 more yes than no votes. Very disappointing. We lost by 8 votes, with most of the 38 No votes cast by people who just enjoy the power trip of denying others what want. >Your advice to shift to the vision group is an appropriate >alternative. I wonder how many people searching for information >about glaucoma on USENET would think to look there if they did not >find a group specifically listed under glaucoma?
Searching Deja.com’s Usenet archive turns up every mention of a word regardless of context - I just found references to glaucoma in over a dozen different news groups as diverse Sci.Med.Pharmacy to alt.motorcycles and alt.games.quake3. Alt.Support.Glaucoma and Sci.Med.Vision were the only 2 truly relevant newsgroups for the disease. Sci.Med.Pharmacy had only 5 glaucoma related treads in the last 6 months. It also has idiots giving insulting answers to serious questions. >I know there is an e group comprised of many former members of >this group, but wonder how well known that option is at this >time – or how readily available that subscription information is >to those doing a first time search for glaucoma support.
Really depends on how well you can search Usenet and the WWW. E-mail support group information should be in the Alt.Support.Glaucoma FAQ. Next time it comes around I’ll check, and if it is not I’ll track down any Glaucoma e-mail lists and suggest they be added to the FAQ. >I would be willing to pursue this option if there was any >interest. >Comments would be welcome – and I think the time may have come for >this discussion to take place here.
I could run a campaign to form Sci.Med.Glaucoma, but with Sci.Med.Vision available it is not needed. As upsetting as the porn spam may be, this group is not really in bad shape. There are groups of people who make a hobby of destroying newsgroups and can make a group almost unusable. We also have a topic that is not very controversial – we don’t fight or insult each other over glaucoma related issues. Incidentally, there is an interesting discussion of homeopathic glaucoma treatments going on in Sci.Med.Vision.There also are more, and different, posters so you may be able to find an answer if a question posted to this newsgroup goes unanswered. >Carol

Al, I agree, and from reading the group comments from those running the spam filters, so do the spam-busters. They are suggesting that active alt.* members prepare to move to the big 8 heirarchy within the next year or so. Since the process for establishing a big 8 (eg sci.*) newsgroup is a relatively complicated procedure, if there is enough interest for a glaucoma group, this process should probably be started in the very near future. On the otherhand, the low volume of posts to this group would not seem to warrant a sci.glaucoma newsgroup in and of itself. Your advice to shift to the vision group is an appropriate alternative. I wonder how many people searching for information about glaucoma on USENET would think to look there if they did not find a group specifically listed under glaucoma? I know there is an e group comprised of many former members of this group, but wonder how well known that option is at this time – or how readily available that subscription information is to those doing a first time search for glaucoma support. I would be willing to pursue this option if there was any interest. Comments would be welcome – and I think the time may have come for this discussion to take place here.
