I agree we need to go easy on newcomers, Debbie, but if they have vision problems, they’ll do better typing in lowercase.  It is much easier to read.  We can help them to increase font size so they can see what they are typing and people like me with serious vision problems can read what they are writing. With my current eyesight, this does come through like shouting.  It crashes right into my eyes.  I cannot read it and can’t wait to delete it so it stops hurting. Kate

right into my eyes.  I cannot read it and can’t wait to delete it so it stops hurting.<< Kate and all, What Kate says is true for many of us here, too.  I am one of them.  When things are in all caps, there is no difference in the height of the letters and they all run together in one blinding blast. When I send a letter/message to anyone, I enlarge the font so that *I can read it while I type…  Then I reduce it before I send it, so that *others can read it. But, if you can’t do that, then I understand… and am sorry I will miss your messages.  So, no disrespect to you, at all  Howard.  But anything in all caps has to be deleted, unless it’s only one or two lines… So, there are *many sides to the different types of vision problems that MS brings. Best, Judith

I use Free Agent to read the newsgroup.  In General Preferences I have increased the Font Size to MS San Serif 14.  I type in this font and I read in this font. I also have changed the Windows display settings to "Plum" which gives me a toned window to read and write in instead of bright white which hurts my eyes.   You might play with these settings at :  Settings, Display, Appearances to find the most comfortable one for you.  Someone with very low vision might want a higher contrast and choose the bright white screen. Since there are several of us on line with vision problems — and many who will experience optic neuritis or neuropathy, perhaps we can share some ideas about making reading easier. Meanwhile, if your hands are having a hard time, just type in all lowercase.   Kate

I also find that messages in all caps hurt my eyes as well.  I had ON in October and while the opthalmologist says I have minimal nerve damage, I seem to have more problems than minimal.  I also have increased pressure so may have glaucoma.  I had never heard anyone else say that all caps hurt their eyes, so glad I’m not alone.  Same thing happens if a paragraph is too long.  This is about as long as I can stand. When I read a letter all in capital letters it makes me feel a bit physically sick, I don’t know why. Carol

Carol, A very interesting description. I, too, have a reaction to "all caps" posting. It could be, just maybe, that the subtle and appreciable nuances of small caps provides a flow for the eyes. This topic, all caps, would be an interesting discussion. Donn

It makes you dizzy. Me too. Then the stomach turns over. If people can only type in one or the other, use lower case, please. You can set your own computer to display larger fonts, esp. if you use AOL. Kathi

Whoa now I know you have a sense o humour hence your <g> in the above but ….some people have MS related vision problems and need to use all caps. It doesn’t mean they are yelling they just might want to see what they’re typing. Some people are just new to the newsgroup or the internet so have a heart and go easy on them.
