Restasis is a wonderful medication for dry eyes…it’s really the only medication on the market for dry eyes…everything else is just a tear drop of one type or another for lubrication. Restasis is cyclosporin A, a medicine that fights inflammation around the lacrimal gland, that many experts feel is responsible for dry eyes. I have had dramatic success with it in my Sjogren’s patients. It should be used in both eyes twice a day. After six months it may be decreased to once a day. My only words of caution is that the medication may sting for the first few weeks of use…this always gets better, and I would not recommend using it before any glaucoma meds because its thick, oily base may prevent absorption of glaucoma meds. Once a tube is opened, it may be refrigerated and used later in the day…don’t let the tip touch anything as there are no preservatives in the tube. Keep it upright in a shot glass (also, Allergan, the manufacturer, makes a little plastic device to keep the tube upright on your refrigerator shelf…your doc may have samples of this…I do). Good luck with it, Dr. Cohn
