Pressure behind eye – Is this normal

Question:

URGENT Do not ignore pressure behind one eye!! De’s best friend had that complaint, went to an optholmatrist (MD for eyes, not go to optometrist , one who measures for glasses) She always had migraines, but they had disguised a rare type of glaucoma, she the next day was sent for lasar treatment for the glaucoma, DO NOT DELAY, GO TO THE EYE DOCTOR AND GET EXAMINED FOR GLAUCOMA Bruce Roswell, NM May you have peace! Anne You have described the very  symptons I have with my migraines.  Pain behind the eye(s), stiffness in the shoulder and neck and I also have a lot of floaters.  I don’t know if the floaters are related to the headaches, my eye doctor says no, but sometimes I wonder. Di

Response:

Interesting.  For most of mine, the icepick *is* the primary pain of the migraine, only it’s just above the eye and lasts for hours. Priscilla

Just about sums mine up! Although many years ago I had traditional migraine with visual aurea(?), these days it is always an eye-related pain, usually unilateral, mostly left, sometimes right (less severe). Usually solid pain, around and above the eye. Very hot water bottle on eyebrow area helps "disguise" the pain. Imitrex is the only thing that gets rid of it. Most all of my migraines are centered in the eye area–the pain is intense there, and goes on for days.  Sometimes it will move from one eye to the other–and if the headache hangs around for a week or so, it may even affect both eyes at the same time for a short while.  By this time, I will actually have black, bruised looking eyes–particularly the area under my eyes. Looks like I haven’t had sleep in weeks and the area feels bruised to the touch.  Yesterday I had no choice but to go grocery shopping, despite the headache I am currently fighting.  I kept thinking that my glasses were dirty–cleaned them several times before I realized that the blurriness and "floaters" I was experiencing were from the migraine.  Actually, I just mentioned to my husband that I was having a difficult time seeing, and particularly reading my grocery list–and he asked if it was because of the headache.  Bingo!  Guess my thinking processes weren’t too sharp either yesterday!  Most of the pain, stabs, pressure, etc in my eyes is in the right eye–wonder if this is because I am right-side dominate (right-handed)? Well, better get back to work packing–leaving tomorrow for 8-hour drive to see family for the holidays–much to do today–joy, joy! Wow ! You guys are " lucky". When I get my HA’s the pain and pressure is behind my eye the whole time! That is what my HA’s consist of, not to mention the dulling of hearing on that side, etc. ( And , no, I don’t mean you are really lucky! Please don’t take it the wrong way! Please!) Take care of you, Jackie K

Anne, I get pressure behind my left eye as part of the aura that I also get. I see this as a mixed blessing<g. I know I’m in for a very bad day but I also know that I can get a jump on it with some *alternative to conventional* therapy. Lydia

Response:

no these are not zig zag lines they are little pin point dots that really dont move much but are just there. ronnie queen of hugs

Today I have a variation on a theme. I woke up with a pain behind my right eye and I feel quite sickly. I also have a bit of stiffness in the right shoulder so maybe the pain is radiating from my shoulder/ neck to my head/eye. Also have a few more floaters than normal, anyone had this ??? Anne

Anne, The icepick behind the eye is my normal sign of impending #10. If I’m going to have a bad series I always get several eye stabs in the hours before onset, they are brief and occur several times as a sort of early warning, since aura is rare for me the warning while painful is appreciated. the neanderthal Pat

Response:

by the floaters do you mean like the little balls of light i get zig zaging around just before and during a migraine. i always called these stars..is it the same? ronnie No, the zig zag lines are the aura I get. The floaters are small transparent shapes which are in your vision all the time and move around when your eyes do.  Some people have them more on foggy days, don’t ask me why ? Anne queen of hugs
