Not OT: Vision Care
Question:
Had my annual check-up at the optometrist this week, and new stronger bifocals are ordered. I will be started Celtic Christmas soon, and I took the chart and the fabric with me to the appointment. When it was time for the doctor to check my near-vision, she placed my chart on her little gizmo for me to try to focus on. When I could see that clearly, she took my fabric out and draped it over her card of written paragraphs, so that I could focus in on the threads. The doctor was pleased that I had thought to bring in my project. She said it helps her to fine-tune my vision, knowing the specific tasks I intend to do. If I could see well enough to read a newspaper, but had difficulty with fine stitching, I would never be satisfied with the glasses. Also, stitchers, please get in and get glaucoma checks annually. (Pardon, but this is my Personal Pet Project, reminding people of this.) Glaucoma usually gives no warning signals and vision loss is irreversible. It comes on so slowly that you are unaware there is a problem until much damage has occurred. My mother is blind in one eye and has loss of sight in the other; can no longer sew and can only read for short periods of time. A good bit of this may have been prevented, had it been diagnosed earlier and treatment started. We stitchers surely value out eyesight. Let’s take the necessary steps to keep it. Pat — fully aware that soap boxes are heavy to drag out and put away again, but worth the effort in a good cause.

Thanks for the reminder, Pat. The next time I go to the eye doctor, I will be sure to take my needlework. Susie Weaver (who is also in the market for bifocals soon) Susan Weaver Ashland,VA "Procrastination is the mother of invention"
