Cupping of the Optic nerve/disc?

Question:

My child has congenital glaucoma that went undiscovered for almost 5 years.  She had large cups( .9 in one eye and .8 in the other). We saw a new glaucoma specialist this week and her pressures were 11 and 14.  He was pleased with those pressures.  She takes no medication currently, and has had two goniotomies in each eye, the last being 4 yrs ago.  What I am interested in knowing about is the cupping, and what happens when/if it gets to 1.0. What actually happens to the nerve?  What happens to the vision in that eye.?  Marsha

Response:

Hi Robert & Marsha; Dr. Robert Ritch responds that hopefully with treatment the cupping won’t increase.
