Prednisone dosage ?

Question:

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi to all, Well…I need to hear your experiences with prednisone doses.  This is the first time I have been on a large dose that has not brought me miracle relief. I started on prednisone at 40 mg/ day right after my colonoscopy.  My GI recommended to decrease 5 mg/ week, not more, not less.  I am at 15 mg now so 3 more weeks to go.  I am surprised to hear that you can be on 60 mg for 3 weeks.  Do you then decrease by 20 mg/ week? Isn’t that a lot? Anyway, this is my iirst experience with prednisone, hopefully the last. Good luck to you! Marie

Yeah, Right lady…

Hi to all, Well…I need to hear your experiences with prednisone doses.  This is the first time I have been on a large dose that has not brought me miracle relief.  This is also the first time I’m having all those "extraintestinal symptoms", scleritis being the worse. I have been at 60mg a day for 3 weeks (20mg prior to this since 12/98).  If the scleritis does not improve by next week, they want to increase the oral prednisone.  I’ve never been on more than 60mg and not sure how all 100lbs. of me is going to tolerate more. Also, please explain how the tapering will occur and over what period of time. Until now, I have had very short (3 week at a time), but successful courses of prednisone. Any experience you can share would be much appreciated. Thanks, thanks, thanks, Traci

Traci: I’m 16 yr. old female who was dx with uc a month ago.  I’ve been 4400 mg of Asacol a day and 60 mg of prednisone from Jan. 15 until Jan. 22 and then i was on 50 one day and 60 the next…that was from Jan. 23 until February 19.  Now my dr. has taken me down to 50 a day.  Hopefully all still goes well, it has so far.  But with being on high dosage of pred, i have to go see the eye dr. on Monday, so that’s one thing u probably will have to ask your dr. about, if u r supposed to see an opthamologist.  I don’t know maybe u have recently.  Being on high dosage of pred. increases chance for glaucoma and iritis and probably other eye conditions.  My dr. said that he’ll taper me slowly off of the pred. which he is doing now, since i’m not bleeding anymore.  He said u can’t just stop the pred. and u can’t just reduce it an instant.  You have to do it slowly, or u will pay the price of withdrawal.  That’s what i’m worried about, but so far i haven’t had any withdrawal symptoms…my dr. knows what he is doing, that’s why i’m still on 50, will be for at least another 2 weeks too.  That’s when my next appt. is, i see or call him every 2 weeks.  And then they decide what to do with the meds.  So, i’m expecting to be on pred. for a while yet, at least 3 months, possibly a year.  Who knows, my dr. doesn’t even know.  It just depends on how your body is reacting at the time.  I’ve been lucky with the pred though…the only side effect i’ve gotten has been the rounding and chubbying of the face and stomach and the increased appetite, but that will go away once i’m off of the pred.  I hope my experience has helped u a little.  Good luck. -Angel – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi to all, Well…I need to hear your experiences with prednisone doses.  This is the first time I have been on a large dose that has not brought me miracle relief.  This is also the first time I’m having all those "extraintestinal symptoms", scleritis being the worse.
