Lupus????
Question:
I have something wrong and can’t seem to motivate the two doctors I have seen to really check. They do blood tests, of course. But does this also diagnose lupus. I have pernicious anemia but take a B-12 shot once a month and that is suppose take care of that. I also have arthritis, glaucoma, and high blood pressure. Aside from that, I am in perfect health. For some years I have been complaining about weakness which led to the diagnoses of the Pernicious Anemia. I am still weak. I can no longer get out of a low seat without using my arms. I sometimes feel like I’m going to fall down any old minute and a stroll around the store uses all of my energy. I often wake up tired in the morning. So the past two months I have developed severe pain in my right shoulder and now am getting a pain in my left shoulder and upper left arm. Also a bit in the neck and back. About two weeks ago I noticed a rash or reddening on my cheeks and across my nose. This rash also is between my eyebrows. My doctor will say it is all old age as he usually does. I am 77 years old which isn’t exactly a spring chicken. But two years ago I could swing a pick axe. Is it old age, lupus, or what? Just sounding off. Thanks for listening.

Hi L, Welcome to the group. I don’t think you should attribute your physical symptoms to your age. There is a drastic change from how you were two years ago. Do you know what blood tests the doctors have done? I think you should get a referral to a dermatologist who could biopsy the rash. I also wondered how long you have been on the B-12 injections. Did you have neuropathy as a result of the PA or did they catch it early enough? I am not saying that it is lupus. I don’t think there is enough info yet to make a judgement. Do you have other joint problems other than your shoulders? You did say you have arthritis. Is it in your shoulders? I hope you don’t mind all of the questions. I would like to help you if I can. Hi Lady, 77 years, WoW. I’m just 52, feel 100. anyway, I found that a lot of older people, over 50mind you that have the same trouble with getting up. I live with a lot of them. I have anemia often and i take iron pills not the shots, The rash might be exzema. I got that too, but there are some get it because of certain drugs they take. I’ve seen this on several of my senior friends. Hang in there and you could try getting a second opinion from other dr. let me know, love, elfgirl "Lyoufixit" <lyoufi…@aol.com> wrote in message

There’s no way we can know. If your docs have not done the proper tests to look for autoimmune disease, then encourage them to do so. For info on tests for AI disease or AI symptoms – go to www.ghg.net/schwerpt/aslfaq30.htm/#dx other sites offer excellent information on these tests as well. I would not put a rash off as "getting older". I sure haven’t seen it in my in-laws, grandparents, etc. It may be rosacea or it may be an autoimmune rash. A dermatologist is the best doc to determine that, IMO. It is common for the malar rash to appear between the eyebrows but there may be other rashes that do the same. The shoulder and neck pain might be arthritis. Should probably have proper x-ray/scans done on these if it is causing you severe pain. It sounds as if your docs have decided that because you are older you don’t need to worry about such things and you should just suffer through. I hate to be that blunt but I think a lot of docs do this. My MILs doc can be difficult to understand but he is one of the few I have met that agrees with me on this. He believes most docs undermedicate older people because of this mistaken belief that their age negates proper treatment. Given the increasing life-expectancy in most industrialized nations – this is just a stupid philosophy to force your patients to live by. (sorry Judith, the grammar checker (brain) is working with minimal power) I have had a lot of muscle weakness – probably mostly due to poor nutrition and lack of exercise. How is your blood pressure? low b.p. can feel like "weakness". HTH, *********************************** KCat – I am not a medical professional.
