Need help w/ Samoyed glaucoma

Question:

I have 2 Samoyeds and know a reasonable amount….It is the first I have heard about the problem being common, the only common ailment for a Samoyed is hip displacia but that has been all but wiped out due to good selective breeding! hope the dog fares well Loland Samoyeds website http://website.lineone.net/~andy.crissell —

My 9-1/2 year old AKC Samoyed was diagnosed this week with what I understand to be glaucoma. She was taken to an opthamologist veterinarian who diagnosed her with this problem/disease.  It is happening only in her right eye; the left eye appears healthy and normal at this time. The vet told me that this is somewhat common in Samoyeds and that it usually occurs by age 6.  The dog is on a gel antibiotic ointment and an oral glaucoma prescription medicine.  In 3 weeks or so she will visit the doctor again to decide whether she should have surgery.  It is unknown whether she will completely lose vision in the eye; it is also not clear how well she is seeing out of the infected eye. Has anyone had this happen to their dog?  What did you do?  What was the outcome? Thanks, in advance, for your help. Mariann (and Nikki)
