Good vibes needed for Tiger <sigh>
Question:
Thinking of you and Tiger. As you know, Waffles insists all the most beautiful and handsome cats have one eye. She tells me that it will add a certain "street cred" to Tiger’s looks and have all the lady cats swooning over him. She also tells me it won’t stop him catching mousies, either. *hugs* etc, helen s — Any spelling errors are due to cats sitting on the keybor*(^Gd
Response:
You got it
He’ll be fine. It’s great that he is with someone like you, who will love and care for him beautifully, "pirate-eye" or not. Blessings, Ginger-lyn – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – We, as in His Royal Feline Lordship Tiger, and I had to go to the vet this morning. At the moment, it’s not good as I have just been told that Tiger might have to lose his left eye. A bit of background, His Royal Feline Lordship Tiger, my black feline tyrant has congenital cataract in his left eye. His left eye is much smaller than his right eye, and he is blind in it. His eyes have been fine recently, but this morning there was a very slight discharge and so because I am completely neurotic and paranoid where his health and especially his eyes are concerned, we went to the vet. To cut a long story short, he has a temperature of 103.8*, the inside of his eye is a sore weeping mess, and the cornea is starting to detach from the rest of the eye and he has a horrible bacteria infection under the eye lids. The vet has said that because he is already blind in the eye, if it should get worse they feel the best option will be to take it out so the poor boy doesn’t have continual problems. He has eye drops and a pain-killer until Wednesday and then I will get a verdict on the next course of action. I feel dreadful that I didn’t notice before, even though the vet assures me there was nothing to see. I am really worried. It’s not that I don’t trust my vet, I do 150%, and I can cope with Tiger losing an eye, but it’s just that out of all my feline kids, Tiger is my absolute baby – he is a spoilt little mummies boy, who I idolise. I just don’t want anything to happen to him. Please, please send some good thoughts his way. Cheers Helen M

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – since he is already blind on that side the only side effect he will have is feeling better once the infection is gone. Our 17 year old has been one eyed for 15.5 years… it took a little getting used to , to see just one golden eye looking at me, but then I found myself winking at him all the time.. Reminds me of when Ade and I got our first flat together. I’d not been in London for very long. We moved in in October, and it was dark when we got home from work. I hadn’t yet seen the garden properly, and the second or third night in the flat I went out to the back garden to put the rubbish out. About twenty yards away, I saw SEVEN green eyes, about ten feet off the ground. I was absolutely terrified, and bolted back into the flat. "Ade, what has seven eyes and is ten feet tall? Whatever it is, we don’t have ‘em in Lancashire!" He refused to go outside (very sensibly), and it was weekend before we figured out what it was. Our new neighbour had four black cats, one of which was one eyed, which liked to sit on our shed of an evening. Jeanette

I was really worried when my vet said that Boots would have to have PU surgery, i.e. remove his penis :-O I thought, how will be feel not having one, will be miss it, will it make "things" difficult… I was really worried that Boots would be a physical and psychological basket case. He wasn’t. I was. He had the surgery and he was immediately walking around fine, begging for food, doing his business–he did need to learn to squat. Same thing when I had to remove Ricky’s teeth. He just had exposed roots only. I thought, how will be eat, how will be survive. He was happy to have those painful roots removed. He ate fine instantly. I was more worried than Ricky. Sounds like you too. I’m sure your kitty will be fine. It’ll take a little adjusting. As he can’t see out of it already, he’s probably already adjusted. Trust your vet. My prayers are with you also.

Many prayers and good thoughts for you and Tiger, Helen. I hope everything goes well for you both and I’m glad that you noticed the tearing of Tiger’s eye. As you might already know, that’s one of the symptoms of glaucoma. My Odie-dog and I just went through an emergency weekend two weeks ago due to glaucoma. In his case, his eye specialist also told me that what happened to him usually happens quite suddenly, sometimes overnight. His cornea also seperated. We go on Monday to his final appointment to see if he loses his eye or not as here in the USA, there is a procedure where the vet injects a high dose of antibiotics into the eye, which kills the glaucoma, causes permanent blindness in the eye, but allows the eye to remain. It’s the course of action for older pets, as Odie-dog is 16.5 now. His vet said he might not have to have his eye totally removed, but withheld final diagnosis until he was stabilized on his glaucoma medicines. Here’s a link to a web page that describes all the different surgeries, which includes the surgery I spoke about above. It helped me to understand what was going to happen with my Odie-dog. http://www.eyevet.ca/ then click on the Glaucoma link. Anyone else reading this message – one of the first symptoms of glaucoma is tearing discharge and a bluish looking cast to the eye. If you ever notice that happening to your older pet, please get him/her to an eye specialist immediately. Glaucoma causes intense pain for our animals! Best wishes again for you both. Hang in there and I’ll light a candle for you both this weekend. Regards, Linda

Helen, lots of good thoughts being sent to you and Tiger. As you’ll know, cats can manage fine with one eye, but their are a couple of potential problems associated with having a ‘blind side’ First he might react differently to other cats walking up to him, as he won’t notice them until they’re nearly on top of him. This might freak him out a little sometimes. Secondly, he won’t be as safe outdoors if he’s in the habit of crossing the road, so you might have to think about restricting him to the back of the house if he does go outside.
