Glaucoma History
Question:
It is a very interesting answer Sherry and I was also wondering about PRK (or similar) for quite the same reasons. (But I’m less myopic). I know we are some people who want to know more about this from different sources beauce opinions vary from country to country and doctor to doctor. So, if someone has more info, please, post. Is there a strong correlation to this, or is it currently just theorized? my opthamolgist keeps asking if I am on steroids for asthma, the answer keeps being no

More glaucoma-pressure idiocy. Just try and figure out what kind of rationality is involved in this little dance. Ray

Hi, I’m newly diagnosed with open-angle glaucoma and I can tell you that yes, prednisone taken for my asthma caused this condition. I have been on prednisone for several years, and glaucoma is just one of the ways that it’s taken its toll. (BTW my pressure was 28 at diagnosis and I showed impaired peripheral vision, damage to the retina and damage to the optic nerve.) I guess I look at it by saying, if I don’t breathe (use the prednisone), I won’t see anyway! Kelly KMarsh4

Dr. Robert Ritch responds that you have it backwards. The surgery causes an artificially LOW reading, making it more difficult to detect glaucoma in highly myopic patients who have LASIK done. In addition to this, the prolonged steroids can cause glaucoma.
