Valerian and Kava-Kava…safe for diabetics?

Question:

I’m a type-1 diabetic who has experimented a bit with valerian and kava-kava (mainly before bedtime if I’m nervous about something), but I think I should probably ask other diabetics as to their opinions. Both work moderately well for relieving anxiety.  Also, I want to take some valerian when I go to the opthamologist for an exam in a few weeks (I get very tense ordinarily during eye exams–especially with the dilation drops and the glaucoma tests)–does valerian alter the eyes in any way that might skew the results of an opthamological exam?

Valerian is a muscle relaxant.  It probably wouldn’t mess up the eye exam but I’d question your ability to drive under it’s influence.  I certainly wouldn’t take it before any medical exam/procedure nor would I take any herb under those circumstances and I’m an herbalist. Better for anxiety is scullcap. Loki
