I had real bad reactions by taking Xalatan (pain). I don’t know why, and my doc doesn’t either–it’s anyone’s guess. John "CndCutler2" <cndcutl…@aol.com> wrote in message

Hi! I was wondering if anyone had any reactions to the preservatives in the eye drops they take for their Glaucoma? My doctor says my eyes are very sensitive to the preservatives in most of the eye drops.
Response:
yes… I have taken Xalatan. Yes Xalatan has preservatives.
Response:
Yes.. I had bad reactions to the Xalatan too.

I stand corrected. Dr Cohn has just posted a reply that suggests that Xalatan does not need to be stored in the fridge. Thanks for the clarification. Regards, Danny ".." <rsha…@home.com> wrote in message

Bad reactions to any medication can occur, but Xalatan is usually the best tolerated of all the medications I use. It seldom causes irritation or discomfort (but obviously it still may happen to some). Xalatan does NOT require refrigeration. Initially the company stated that the bottle had a 30 day shelf life and required refrigeration PRIOR to opening the bottle. This is no longer the case (unsure why the company changed its policy). Xalatan, like most other drops, is preserved with Benzalkonium Chloride. The only other glaucoma drop with a different preservative is Alphagan-P (the P is for Purite, its preservative). For patients with allergies to these preservatives, certain glaucoma drops can be compounded specially without preservatives. Timolol, for instance, may be made preservative-free. The were once provided by Merck in individual vials. I don’t know if they still make them. Leiter’s Pharmacy in San Jose, CA compounds several different glaucoma meds and ships them in coolers all over the country. Their glaucoma meds made preservative-free include timolol, pilocarpine, Xalatan, and Cosopt. They can be found on the web at Leiterrx.com. Hope that was helpful for some. Have you used Xalatan? I don’t think it has any preservatives (hence its need to be refrigerated before it is opened.)
