hair loss breakthough in use yet?
Question:
Recently i heard somthing in the News(the news in the UK) about a discovery that allowed Chemptherapy patents to keep their hair while going thought the treatment
Believe it or not, the news is not a good source of info about cancer treatment. If you watch enough news programs and science shows, I don’t think a week will go by without you hearing about another new, exciting breakthrough. Most of these "breakthroughs" are barely out of the hypothesis stage and will be found to be useless/toxic/expensive long before they reach market. One example of this is the cure for the common cold. It was discovered two or three decades back. If you take it, your cold is *gone*. *Now*. The only problems are, it requires the entire blood of a number (10?) of human cadavars and cost $10,000 per treatment. It’s still not on the market. The problem with this cream is that it has only ever been tested on animals. It still has more animal testing to be done before it can be tested on one single human being. There are many human tests it must pass, including tests for toxicity. There are many ways it could fail before ever reaching the pharmacy shelf. News programs try hard. It is nice to see what might work someday. Some of the things they tell us about *will* be marvelous breakthroughs someday. Actually, the discovery is an old one. It’s called a paper bag and it allows anyone on chemo to keep his hair. Sorry, have not heard of what you mention. Losing hair isn’t all that big a deal these days when you see many man and women walking around bald. Eric Unofficial C8 Homepage http://www.ngc1514.com

Here’s a link to the story, and a teaser. They showed that an experimental compound reduced hair loss by up to 50% in rats given chemotherapy. There is a procedure that prevents hair loss during chemo by cooling the head, however, there is a possibility that the chemo meds may not reach some areas because of the cooling. Catch 22. I just received a new prescription for Glaucoma eye drops (Xalatan) that cause the eyelashes and brows to grow. It is being researched to help with hairloss but will likely take some time. Beryl

There is an article in Science recently, included pictures of mice with hair on head (head was treated) and no hair elsewhere after chemo. Very convincing picture. Read this several weeks ago, do not remember exact issue, probably sometime in Dec. 2000. Google search should turn it up. As I recall there was some discussion about starting clinical trials soon. My own opinion is that any chemical (or herb or whatever) that has an effect on rapidly dividing cells should be carefully investigated before being used … — … Hank http://horedson.home.att.net
