Glaucoma surgery

Question:

I am scheduled to have a surgical procedure done for my glaucoma problem I have had for 12 years and I also have a dry eye caused by facial nerve damage and i am having a difficult time deciding if I would be better off without this operation. i had a acoustic neuroma removed in 1985 and it took me five years to have a somewhat normal life. I am 59 years old and my pressures are low but my Doctor tells me my optic nerve is being damaged. Is there anyone else with these problems and how did the operation help or hinder your life style? I had the laser procedure almost 5 years ago. This was after drops no longer were effective in lowering my pressure within normal limits. The procedure was virtually pain free and luckily I have had normal readings with no medications ever since. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I have Pigmentary Glaucoma, diagnosed over a year ago. I am 58. Just came back from a visit with my Optho. He is referring me to a specialist because he believes surgery is needed to increase drainage. Will see specialist Sept. 3. Referral made because after one year of Alphagan 3x/day, and Xalatan 1x/day, damage is progressing in left eye. IOP was 20L, 16R. Anybody know what kind of surgery we’re talking about here? Is it general anasthesia? Does it work? I didn’t have my wits about me and didn’t think of these questions when I was there. Thanks for any help Steve Grier s…@sirius.com

Dear Pers, I think a whole lot depends upon the precise nature of the surgery. Some procedures appear to be almost 100% problem-free, while others seem to have more difficult side- and after-effects. I’m not a doctor, but I think specificity would help the docs who read here to comment. Hi Steve, You should ask your dr. what kind he means. Don’t be afraid to call him and speak with him with your questions. I can tell you I use to go with a list of questions when I was first diagnosed over 6 years ago. I have had a trabeculectomy, which may be what he means. Mine was not successful and I am left with having to dialate my pupil and various drops every day. It might not be a bad idea to find out what kind of surg. he meant before you go to your specialist so you can inquire further and reseach it prior to your visit. Good luck with the specialist.
