A small piece of silicone is inserted into the punctum (the opening of the tear drainage ducts found near the nose on both the upper and lower eyelid margin). By blocking off these ducts tears stay on the eye longer and that helps in dry eye patients.
I’m guessing that your ophthalmologist feels that having these plugs in place may also help keep your glaucoma medications on the eye better (less goes down the drain) and therefore lower the IOP further. I’ve never seen any studies on this, but it is a reasonable hypothesis. I had punctal plugs put in a few years ago for dry eyes. I also suffer from elevated IOP. The plugs were not touted to me as having any infludence on IOP (and didn’t). If the eyedoc is talking punctal plugs, he will first run a test with plugs which dissolve over a few days. If, before they dissolve, they work for the dry eyes, then permanent plugs can be put in (Permanent in the sense that they don’t dissolve—they can be removed.) If he is not talking punctal plugs, then forget what I am saying. If he is, a search for <punctal plugs> in your favorite search engine should give you lots of info On Sat, 16 Aug 2003 17:21:29 GMT, Don <rver…@mindspring.com> wrote: >A friend of mine, who has glaucoma, has a problem with dry eyes and high >pressures even though he is taking drops of some kind. A friend of mine, who has glaucoma, has a problem with dry eyes and high pressures even though he is taking drops of some kind. His Doctor has recommended some sort of plugs that are inserted in the lower portion of the eye lid. His Doctor says this may help lower the pressures as well as the dry eye problem. I’ve not heard of this before but perhaps someone can enlighten us on this treatment. Don
