Eye Drops
Question:
I still use a mirror when I put my drops in. I have done it without, but just like the certainty of getting it right in there and knowing when it’s going to hit the old eyeball I guess. Peggy

Hi, I am 22 years old and have recently been diagnosed with Glaucoma. The doctor has prescribed Timoptic. I have been taking them for a week and I am having trouble actually getting the drops into my eyes, the drops frequently end up on my cheek. When I do manage to get the drops into my eyes, my eyes tear up and it seems that the drops are running out of my eyes and I’m afraid that they won’t do me much good. Does anyone have any tips on instilling the eye drops? I’m afraid that I’m going to run out of the drops before I’m due for a refill and then I’ll have to call the doctor and tell him what an idiot I am. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Alex

Welcome to the club. You are not alone. All of us I am sure have had the same problem when we started using eye drops. For about a month I had my wife do it for me until I decided that this was too much dependance so I bit the bullet and started doing it myself. Messy at first but you soon get the hang of it, and as a amtter of fact improve steadily as you go on. I started to use the artificial tears to practise with at first. They are inexpensive and have no negative effect. Just remember that the reaction of the eye is rapid so you have acclimate it to the presence of the dropper. This only comes with repeated use. Hang in, you are not alone. Saul Schonfeld

Hi Alex A lot of people have trouble with drops in the begining.. I hold the bottle with the same hand that I use to open the lower lid. that way the bottle has to be very close to the eye. Remember not to touch the lid or lashes with the bottle…keep it sterile as you can…and remember that one drop is more liquid the an eye can hold. Some will always drip down yuor cheek. Try buying a bottle of artificial tears (about $5 ) and practice with that. You can use as much as you want and as often as you want. Good Luck Mark

Howdy Alex: I solved the problem of drops running down my cheek by putting my eyedrops in after I get into bed. When you are laying flat on your back looking up at the ceiling, the drops have a tendency to pan out rather than drip down. Let gravity work for you instead of against you. Good luck. Dave

Hi Everyone, Thank you so much for your help. I have been practising instilling the drops with the tips you gave me and a bottle of artificial tears (great suggestion, it never even occurred to me to practise with an inexpensive bottle of artificial tears). I’m getting much better at instilling the drops. I think that if I just relax when I get ready to put the drops in (I hate eye drops and therefore get apprehensive when I put them in) I will be an old pro in no time. Thanks again, Alex
