Bassett Glaucoma

Question:

Hi, my 8 1/2 year old female spayed Bassett’s right eye got very red and swollen a couple of weeks ago.  The Vet treated it as some sort of conjunctivitis, but after a week it was terrible, and he re-diagnosed it as Glaucoma.

:-( Any suggestions and information would be much, much appreciated.

Yes–I would suggest that you get her into a veterinary opthalmologist just as soon as possible. This is NOT the kind of thing that general-practice vets deal with very often, and it’s very likely that an opthalmologist will make available other options for you. Time is of the essence here–don’t delay. And do keep us posted. Dianne

Hi, my 8 1/2 year old female spayed Bassett’s right eye got very red and swollen a couple of weeks ago.  The Vet treated it as some sort of conjunctivitis, but after a week it was terrible, and he re-diagnosed it as Glaucoma.  Then a week on very expenxive meds and zero improvement. Pressure in eye still high, but she has part of her energy back and doesn’t appear to be in pain as she was.  Vet just increased oral med, eye drops continue the same.  He said if no improvement in another week then we have the choice of going to expert for possible "freezing" of eye, or extraction of eye ball.  If it improves by next week then we would be looking at buying these very expensive human drugs for the remainder of her life, which vet says is 2 to 5 years.  (She is a great, great pet.  We got her from a breeding kennell when she was 4 1/2; they no longer wanted her as she was not making enough babies.)  Any suggestions and information would be much, much appreciated.   Thanks for reading.
