Those funky glasses…
Question:
Had been using the "chest" magnifier for quite sometime….and suddenly discovered that my new BIFOCALS (dreaded word..) accomplished the same magnification! Eureka! But, some days I need both my glasses AND my magnifier. This getting old stuff can be a bear….. Bev M. —

— Judith Truly fax: (937) 222-8309 I have a pair of those glasses and they worked fine until I got my regular glasses but for the best job get a pair of thi=ose magnifiers that look like goggles with a band that goes around the back of your head. They magnify and they fit on over your glasses and you can get them in several magnifications and when you need to see something unmagnified you just shove them up on your forehead. I’ve seen them advertised in catalogs. Judith

DH was reading over my shoulder, wanted to know why why woman would want a chest magnifier for herself! (LOL – he also said I don’t need one!) Went to the Opthomologist ??? and he said buy them!
But only buy them after you’ve had a thorough eye exam!!!! (They will make you see if you have the right kind of prescription, but must not be used without an exam.) People with glaucoma that they don’t know about will see just fine with "drugstore" glasses- until they go blind! Teresa/LadyDoc- who always reminds people to get yearly eye exams

I find that sometimes it helps to just take off my bifocals and stitch. That’s what I do when I "compute" also.

Before I finally gave in and got reading glasses to go over my contacts, I used the magnifying glasses. They worked quite well. I recommend the bifocal types. I could never get used to the ones on the end of my nose. The full frame non bifocal types are good only if you never intend to look up, then the whole world is very out of focus. Has anyone ever used those magnifying glasses you can buy at Walmart, Walgreen’s, etc.? They look like "real" glasses or half glasses. I wear contacts and I have tried to use the magnifier that sits on my chest – but the cat keeps hitting it, or I shift positions and it moves…(more whining) I thought maybe these glasses would be a good substitute! I’m off to the nearest Walgreen’s! (Do they have Walgreen’s in Georgia?) Thanks for all the tips, information, and the knowledge that I will be "way cool" in my funky glasses! Do I hear a new trend on college campuses……? Cheryl

Cheryl: Do I ever use those magnifiers!!! I also wear contact (monovision kind) & have trouble with depth perception when wearing them. I tried on some without my contacts to see which ones I would use. (I bought them when they were on sale, so that it wouldn’t be a big loss if they didn’t work out.) I don’t have to wear my contacts when stitching, just when I want to see things that are big, like cars!!
I love to stitch on 32 and 36 ct. linen and even 40 ct. silk gauze, over one!! The magnifiers work great!! Like all magnifiers, you can’t see a thing far away, so I got the half glasses kind. That way I can glance up at tv occasionally & not have a big blurr… I think the secret is to try them out to see what strength you need before you buy them. Best of luck!! NitaNeedle

I must have missed something. What funky glasses are you talking about?

I have one pr. in the kitchen to read those tiny instructions on some of the boxes. One in the bath to check my make-up, one in the sewing room and spend half of my life looking for my glasses!

Yup, sure do. I wear contacts too, and this set-up works like a charm! I bought "full" lenses, but find they are always sitting on the end of my nose so I can look over the tops – I think I would buy "half-rounds" if I ever need another. Jill

Hi Cheryl, Personally, I use the hang-around-the-neck-rest-on-the-chest magifier, in defiance of my pets( dogs, cats, cockatiels). Tried a pair of the magnifier glasses, and felt like I was in a fun house! They made me dizzy (er). I tried them at the recomendation of a member of one of my round robins, who swears by them. It didn’t work for me, but when it does work it must be great. And we all know that we’ve spent lots more on stuff we HAD to have, and didn’t use
Happy stitching’ Darlene
