? re: vacs

Question:

For most vaccines, the dose is the same for all dogs…. same for humans, too, BTW.  It has to do with the immune system function in changing the vaccine itself into active immunity. It’s not like a medication, say an anti-biotic, where the dose is determined by size.  A breeder I know decided to reduce the dose of immunizations she gave her own dogs… and got two cases of distemper in her 8 dog pack. If your vet is aware of the glaucoma, s/he will know whether it is safe to give vaccines.  It shouldn’t be a problem as vaccines don’t "do anything" to the structure and function of the eye.  Just continue your usual treament for the glaucoma. My 6 lb Toy Fox Terrier dog is due her shots in the morning. In the meantime, she is on medication for glaucoma. Will the vacs interfere with her meds, or vice versa? Do they give small dogs the same "dose" as big dogs?  thanks.

Response:

How old is your dog?  If she’s had all her puppy series and is an adult and has been getting vaccinations for everything every year, I’d have a long discussion with the vet about what the risks and benefits are of vaccinating yearly.  Yes, small dogs get the same dose as big dogs. Here’s some reading: http://critterfixer.com/new_vaccination_protocols[1].htm http://www.cvmbs.colostate.edu/vth/savp2.html As for the meds and possible reactions, please ask the vet. buglady take out the dog before replying
