Question regarding retina problems
Question:
Fascinating! I have the same problem with my eyes, diagnosed about 5 years ago when I failed a driver’s exam. I was always told that it was due to improper wearing of contact lenses, although I was meticulous about their care and wear. I was diagnosed with OSA 3 months ago. I would never have dreamed there might be a connection. Some bright researcher may have a paper here. Kendall Reimer – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -MICHELE PETYS wrote: > Hi. I recently had a small operation to remove a cyst from my eyelid. The specialist gave me a thorough examination beforehand, but as soon as I mentioned suffering from OSA he immediately tested me for glaucoma as he believed there can be a link between the two. He also checked ‘eye pressure’ and could tell that I suffer from hypertension also. It appears that blood vessels in both the eyes and nose are likely to leak with this condition. The specialist gave me the OK, but was keen that I have a further check in 2 years, and therafter on a regular basis. It does appear that there may be some link. Sorry I don’t have more info. Dan.

Michele I have a similar problem. I have OSA for 20 years, treated only in the last 5 years. 13 years ago I started to have problems with my eyes. I have been diagnosed with Central Serous Retinopathy. Initially I had leakeage in both eyes but it receded. Later I had problems again with my left eye where now the very centre of vision is blurry. I still can pass the test for a drivers license. My right eye is not too bad with glasses but far from perfect vision. Last October I went to a conference in Toronto. A doctor made a presentation of the results of a study which proved that untreated OSA caused temporary inflammation of the optic nerve each morning which later in the day returned to normal. The explantion he gave was that when the brain lacks oxigen, its blood vessels swell to draw more blood. Since the craneal bone cannot expand this causes the brain to pressure the optical nerve. His study was limited and therefore his findings were limited. He did not study the effect on the retina. He did say that there is a need for more research here. Good luck, Carlos *************************************** delete "nospam" for e-mail reply ***************************************

Hi. I have had my CPAP for a little over a month now. When I had my sleep study done, they found my oxygen saturation levels in the low 80’s and dipping once to 79%. Two – three weeks ago, I started having vision problems in my right eye. The horizontal and vertical lines on computer screen were starting to look wavy. I thought I needed new glasses. Then I noticed that part of my vision in the right eye was being seen through a round yellow/ grey filter. I made appt with opthamalogist (sp?) and was there at clinic from 9 am to 4 pm having this test and that test done. I saw a retina specialist and was diagnosed with choroidal neovascular membrane (CNV), something similar to Macular Degeneration. In my case, I have an abnormal growth of blood vessels which apparently are leaking and damaging my vision. After seeing retina specialist one week later, it was determined that my eyesight had deteriorated a bit more (I failed an eye exam at driver’s license place) and that I would need surgery. My doctor is trying to get insurance to pay for a new, non invasive treatment that has just been approved. Next week is the deadline that I have either the surgery or the new procedure PDT, photodynamic treatment, I believe it is called. Now, my reason for writing. I have been reading on the internet any info on this conditiion (which my dr. says has no know cause) and I have purchased books at the bookstore. An interesting thing I found out was that the eye/retina was the organ in the body that needed oxygen the most for the well being or health of the eye. I have seen nothing relating sleep apnea with this problem but it seems to me that if you have untreated sleep apnea and are suffering low saturation levels then could this be a "cause" for this type of problem that I have? Has anyone heard of anything linking sleep apnea to eye/retina problems? Does anyone here have any type of eye problem? My concern is actually a selfish one. I have already lost the vision in my right eye due to that circle of grey. When I close my left eye and only look out of my right eye, I can see, but the center of my vision is greyed out and twisted, distorted. So if I was talking to you and looking at you, your face would look all messed up. However, with both eyes open, I see pretty good. It just looks like there is this round spot on my right lens of my glasses that needs to be cleaned! My concern about any links between sleep apnea and this type of problem is for my left eye. I believe that I had undiagnosed sleep apnea for years, so I am concerned about this. Thanks for any replies, and please, everybody, go have your eyes checked. It is so easy to put it off, but I am learning very quickly how dear and valuable our eyesight is. Michele
