Question:
My wife has an IOP of 26 Her Opthalmologist Looked behind the eye and she passed a Field Test. The Dr. said she does not have Glaucoma. If this is true then: What else can cause an IOP of 26? Thank You WM

Forgive a non-professional for jumping in, but…….nowdays, the view seems to be you don’t have glaucoma unless there is evidence of damage. Some people just run higher pressure than others. Conversely, some people with lower than normal pressure have glaucoma (damage). Family history becomes important here. Did a relative suffer glaucomatous damage? If so, there is cause for concern regardless of pressure. In my own case I have had pressures as high as 46, yet no damage. My current pressure runs 12 to 16 with Timoptic and Pilocar (.5% both), plus a nutritious diet and regular exercise (and a prayer or two). Personally, I would not feel comfortable with 26. Look carefully at family history, lifestyle issues, etc. Read this newsgroup, especially methods for lowering pressure, and don’t neglect pressure checks every 3 to 6 months.

Glaucoma isn’t something that "causes" a raised IOP. It may *result* from a considerably raised IOP, other causes or from combinations thereof. It may or may not accompany a raised IOP and may be present without a raised IOP. Pigment loss or exfoliation can cause a raised IOP, with or without glaucoma, but so can various innocuous things when the IOP is only 26. Allergies can, for one thing. Ray Ray
