One or two questions, from newbie.
Question:
Bad breath is an indicator of ketoacidosis. It is also an indicator of other diseases and conditions (like bad dental hygiene). Sounds like you do have a problem. Whether it is diabetes or something else (old age?) is something that a competent MD should be able to determine. Good luck. Hopefully this will remind you of what you wrote Mike. I have said The game I play is "To tell the truth" And in truth… That was a very good post. "Nothing adds excitement like something that is none of your business" Tomorrow will be canceled due to lack of interest. Net-Tamer V 1.08X – Registered

I hope that’s not the diagnosis — I’m only 30.

I haven’t done the bloodwork for diabetes yet, but several family members have it. I am losing depth perception, my vision is blurry, and I could swear my left eyeball is swelling. I have all the other symptoms too. I pee sometimes 10-15x an hour and sleep excessively. I can’t gain weight to save my life.
Time to see an endo! My questions are: On the neuropathy, are your feet just cold as ice and numb, or could they sweat like crazy too? Sometimes I am bodily warm and dry, but I can’t feel my feet (except for the tingling) and they are like ice to the touch and have ice cold sweat from the ankles down.
There are tests for neuropathy. The symptoms vary. (My feet are cold in the winter, hot in summer…..) Do diabetics also get hand tremors?
Diabetics get everything that non-diabetics get. Some things that non-diabetics get are more prevalent in diabetics. There are two reasons: 1) some conditions have causes in common with diabetes (obesity- diabetes, obesity – heart disease) and these diseases occur in parallel but independently 2) diabetes can itself cause other conditions (diabetes-vascular degeneration-heart disease). A long time ago, I saw a blurb about a dentist diagnosing diabetes because of the condition of his patient’s teeth. How does diabetes affect teeth/gums?
The gums are very bloody tissue, easily damaged by vascular degeneration secondary to diabetes (and many other causes, like poor dental hygiene). Using that to diagnose diabetes is a bit like using an empty barn to diagnose runaway horse. And can ketosis sometimes be mistaken for garlic breath? I know it’s like alcohol, but I get told I have both without drinking alcohol or eating garlic.
Bad breath is an indicator of ketoacidosis. It is also an indicator of other diseases and conditions (like bad dental hygiene). Does the blurry thing fix, or is it permanent? My optometrist swears my prescription is perfect for me.
Good control of bg will go a long way to keeping vision at prescription levels. Do you forget to eat? I quite often don’t think of food until I get severe hunger pains. 18 hours at a stretch is common. Plus if I don’t eat fast I lose interest.
Control of diabetes demands much more attention to what and when you eat. If you are diabetic, the days of eating what you want when you want are over. Sorry. Are mood swings readily controlled once treatment starts? And does your energy level go up? I have stamina when needed, but need at least 12-15hrs sleep. I can’t get anything done.
bg has a huge impact on sleep, energy, mood swings. Control bg, control those. My diabetic friends do the pinprick thing on me and it always says 100. What if I go to the doc and my blood looks fine? Is the testing foolproof? Does the test show the truth even if you are having a good bg day?

Well, since you know you’re an idiot for not seeing a doctor sooner, I won’t bother telling you that! ;-) Seriously, go to a doctor. The random fingerpricks that your friends are doing are NOT particularly useful, particularly if you manage to go for hours and hours without eating. You need to get a fasting test done and that should tell you. You sound like you have a lot of problems going on. Having had eye problems myself, I know they’re not something to mess around with. You MUST not trust the word of your optometrist; they are not trained to diagnose the kinds of problems you might be having. Get yourself to an opthalmologist ASAP! THIS I know from personal experience. When I went to get glasses, the optometrist told me I had an astigmatism in my left eye; that’s it. When I went to an opthalmologist a few months later, she diagnosed severe hardening of the arteries in my eye, which resulted in bleeding, neovascular glaucoma (glaucoma could very well be what you’re experiencing as "swelling in your left eye" — it feels like that), and ultimately, the loss of vision in my eye, and even with that, I’ve had to have numerous lasers and cryopexies. You do not want to go through all that if you can avoid it. And yes, if you ARE diabetic and your numbers are high, your vision can clear up once you get your numbers in order. Dentists can get a good idea whether or not their patients have diabetes because you’re a lot more prone to gum disease and infection. Yes, your mood swings can clear up considerably once your sugar is stabilized. So the short version is get yourself to not one, but two (include that opthalmologist) doctors RIGHT NOW and report back to us! Wendy

My optometrist swears my prescription is perfect for me. I can’t see my feet touching the ground in the dim light (makes for careful walking), and everything is SO blurry. Also, things are much closer in one eye than the other. My vision is -4.00, .50 worse than the previous exam, and I don’t have much room for more loss before I start shopping for a good guide dog. I’m sure they’ve all been asked before. Post here or email me, either is greatly appreciated. Simerion
