Glaucoma and removal of eye
Question:
Penny – make sure you see a dog opthalmologist soon. There are medications out there that can keep the pressure down in the eye he has left. It needs to be monitored and checked. Did the referral in ORE work for you, or do you need one in the Seattle area? tanya TACHANKA SIBERIANS "All Four Paws Rolling" Wenatchee, WA
Response:
Thanks to all of you with suggestions for my Shih Tzu. We are going to his regular vet tomorrow for a check-up and we will ask what our next step should be. I’m hoping that he won’t lose the other eye in the future. In the meantime, he’s just as perky as he ever was. If I had lost an eye, I don’t think I’d be running around, doing tricks, and acting like nothing had happened. Penny

Yesterday, my Shih Tzu’s eye ruptured and needed to be removed. The vet said that it was most likely due to glaucoma. My big concern is that his other eye will also develop this problem. Are there any vets who specialize in ophthalmology in the Oregon or Washington area? The vet here said there was little that could be done as dogs do not respond to medication in the same way as people. However, I would like to get a second opinion. If anyone knows of a vet or any information that would help, please contact me email. Thank-you. Penny
You are right that the other eye is at risk of developing glaucoma. Medication only temporarily controls glaucoma but there are surgical procedures that are often effective. You need to ask your vet to refer you to an ophthalmologist. Go to www.eyevet.org for more information on glaucoma. J.

Also try visiting www.blinddogs.com (even though your dog may not be blind). You can get on the Blind Dogs mailing list from there. Lots of people’s pooches there have gone through (and are going through) eye removal due to glaucoma and other conditions. You will find much good advice, both about the medical condition and also about living with vision-impaired dogs. Glaucoma can be a very painful condition, and eye removal (along with loss of sight) is often a much happier alternative for the dog. Best wishes to you and your pup, Emily

Sorry to hear about your Shih Tzu, Penny. Known opthamology vets in Oregon? In the Portland area there is Northwest Medical Specialists. There is a Vet there named Dr. Shirley. A friend of mine just had a growth removed from her Pug’s eye and was extremely happy with the service & caring of this facility. (digging through my box of info for my pups)… Okay, they are on SE 82nd in Clackamas, Oregon. I will email you privately with the phone number. I know several people who’ve gone there for testing, or have had orthopedic surgeries there that have been very happy with the results for their furry friends. Shelly, Coda & Guiness…
