Chat Update July 21st, 1999

Question:

HI Everyone! This week the group met at 9:30pm.  We have decided to change the meeting time to 8:30pm eastern time starting next week and every week thereafter. Dr. Rick Wilson was available for a "Q and A’ session.  One subject we talked about was something I had heard from an optometry student that I had the recent pleasure of meeting.  Rick confirmed that yes, optometrists can treat glaucoma in New Jersey.  There were mixed opinions on this topic.   Another personal topic for myself that we covered was malignant glaucoma.  Rick explained that malignant glaucoma happens in small eyes where the lens  moves slightly forward and it becomes easier for the fluid made in the eye to move posteriorly into the eye rather than forward into the front of  the eye where it can be drained. The pressure builds up and up, hence the name malignant glaucoma. There is no association with cancer.   We also had another member recently diagnosed with pigmented glaucoma. Rick explained that pigmented glaucoma is when pigment particles are knocked off the back of the iris and float in the fluid of the eye getting sieved out and blocking the drain causing the IOP to rise.  We now have several members with that particular type.   We are certainly not a group with your run of the mill glaucoma, we run the gamut!  See you next week.  Remember the new time, 8:30pm eastern.  To get to the CHAT point your browser to http://wills-glaucoma.org/support.htm.
