Glaucoma/macular deg.: alt.treatment update 1

Question:

This is interesting information.  You have shown to me that there may be a positive connection between Ginko use and reduction of the effects of glaucoma.  However, more testing is needed to say that there is a positive connection. The increasing of blood flow may not always be a good thing.  In "Coping with Glaucoma", by Edith Marks and Rita Montauredes, describe diabetic retinopathy, they wrote, "In this condition, errant blood vessels travel to places where they do not belong-they grow over the iris and the drainage vessels, where they clog things up, and over the retina, where they damage nerve tissues." I would not say that using ginko would cause a condition like diabetic retinopathy.  However, it might. In a similar way, I also question the standard use of IOP reducing methods on eyes with normal tension glaucoma and lower tension POAG.  I wonder if the body actually regulates the IOP to a higher level to compensate for some eye problem.  It seems to be assumed that reducing IOP can’t be anything but good. However, it is easy for me to see how a slightly elevated IOP might be beneficial to the eyes.  For instance, if the tiny blood vessels in the eye were weak to the point of being almost leaky, an increased IOP would help keep the vessels intact. Keep up the good work Corry. Best wishes. Steve (not an eye professional)
